What is the pelvic floor?
The pelvic floor is a group of muscles and connective tissue located at the base of the pelvis that plays an important role in how the body functions. As part of the body’s core muscles, the pelvic floor helps with stability and provides support to the internal organs of the pelvis, such as the bladder, bowel, and uterus. It also helps maintain bladder and bowel control and continence and plays a critical role in sexual function.
When the pelvic floor is not working properly, problems affecting one or more of its functions can arise. Physiotherapists trained in pelvic floor related conditions can help address these problems.
